Terraclear - Clean Water for Families in Laos
Terraclear - Clean Water Access for families in Laos
The Problem
Over 80% of households in Laos must boil their water to make it safe to consume, and despite many taking this precaution, preventable illness and diseases from drinking unsafe water is still a leading cause of death for children under 5.
The Solution
Terraclear is breaking down the barriers that make accessing clean water challenging for rural communities. By manufacturing and distributing ceramic filters, families can produce their own safe water every day. As it is no longer necessary for families to boil the water, they can buy or collect less wood, reduce smoke in the kitchen, and protect forests from further deforestation.
Impact and Benefits
- 33,000 ceramic filters benefiting an estimated 150,000 people in over 500 villages in Laos
- 15,000 tonnes of C02 saved annually
- Less time spent collecting and boiling water
- Reduced firewood use and carbon emissions
- Lowers cases of waterborne disease
- Reduced deforestation improving local wildlife and ecosystems
- Removes the need for women and children to collect firewood
- It gives more time to spend on income-generating activities
- Allows children more time to focus on education
